Dr. Katie Chetta joined host Bobbi Conner on Health Focus, MUSC’s health segment on South Carolina Public Radio, to talk about donor milk for premature infants in the NICU. The segment, “Donor milk for premature infants in the NICU,” aired November 25, 2025.

Dr. Chetta explains why breast milk matters for premature babies, helping them grow and protecting them from infection. Trials show that donor milk, compared with formula, lowers the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). She also describes how the nonprofit HMBANA milk bank network, including the Mothers’ Milk Bank of South Carolina in North Charleston, screens, pasteurizes, and freezes donated milk.
